Witch Doom Back Online! hedcase1 | Friday, September 29, 2000

After a few days of downtime due to the SSCC server crashing, Witch Doom is back online!

The zone is now called SSCE Witch Doom. This is its new, permanent host. This however IS NOT the Exodus server Pro League, Chaos, AML, United, and Dueling is on. This is a new, seperate server that is owned by hedcase8 and myself. It is located in Charlotte, NC (USA) and is on a dual T1 connection. This should hopefully be the last move for Witch Doom for a long time to come.

The remaining SSCC Zones (USD Annihilation, Subicide, and Paintball) should HOPEFULLY be back online this evening as well!

Be sure to update your server list with the new Witch Doom and check it out!
Pro League Council - Disbanded! Yazour | Thursday, September 28, 2000

Effective today, the Pro Council is no more. You can find the announcement from Ghost Ship along with many opinions from the opinionated players of Pro League.

The council served as an advisory committee to the Pro League sysop, Ghost Ship. Here's what Ghost has to say on why he chose to disband the council:

"Status of the Pro League Council:

The purpose of this council when Danskar and I formed it 2 years ago was 2 fold.

1. Bring more player input into the pro rules and into league play.
2. Provide a focus group for instituting rules based on what is happening / problems with pro league.

This was a huge improvement of the previous system, where the pro sysop made up rules and instituted them at his whim. As a focus group for rule improvements and changes this council has in the past been very effective. Currently this council flounders and makes little progress on any one issue.

As a group for bringing player input into the game and rules of pro league, this group has failed terribly. A good portion of that is how I had designed this group and the direction I allowed it to take.

The current changes in pro and the vision of this council is no longer one I can personally follow. I am sysop of this entire league, not just the top ten squads. The feeling of the players, and the gameplay must be fair for all, even at the cost of longer games for the top teams. Effective immediately I am disbanding the Pro League Council.

Exactly how and what kind of groups I use in the future for rule changes and changes to pro is not determined at this time.

I harbor no resentment towards any of you at all.

I see this as basic philosophical differences in how this league should be run and what direction it is taking.

I still have respect for your opinions and the considerable effort many of you have put into this league. This egroups will be cancelled tomorrow after all members have received this notification.

Alex Zinner

Sysop - Pro League"

Happy Birthday Chy HeartBreakKid | Thursday, September 28, 2000

Chy, co-sysop of Death Star Battle has a birthday today. How old is this sweet talkin lady turning? Well, that's one question that won't get answered. As Chy told me on ICQ a few moments ago, "a lady never tells her age". Well, those of you who happen to take a peak in DSB today, if ya see this lady in there, tell her happy birthday.
Witch Doom’s 3rd year anniversary! Gizzo | Thursday, September 28, 2000

Can’t believe its been 3 years since we started this zone back in September of 97. I gotta thank weed that made this zone possible :) it assisted us in staying up long nights and just playing with the settings purely on what made us laugh. Of course we made a lot a mess ups at first, but it gave us a base of what the zone was to be like, and it matured to the zone you see today.
We have a lot planned, recently we have been recruiting mods that are dedicated to just hosting events. A lot of interesting sub-arenas were created like:
?go race(2,3) = Huge race map 3 tracks, greatest race map created, go see for yourself :) (map: ZaGNoTZiG)
?go ctf = which is 2 team only, 2 big intense bases, capture the flags and bring it back to your base and defend it /w modded Witch Doom settings (map: The Romulans)
?go elim = Tight little map for elimination games, bot run (map: Wicked_)
?go slamball = Crazy soccer map with only 1 goal in the middle for everyone to score and defend (map: ZaGNoTZiG)
…and whole bunch more in the making like spiralwars, which is gonna be a turf style map with a turf flag in the middle of the spiral, ya have to hold for a certain amount of time to get award. We even got an League forming up, we plan to run it very similar to how Eclipse ran AM league some 2 years ago with the pyramid type ranking, same way the dueling tourney would be run also. If your interested in joining the team of events mods here at WD or have some ideas yourself and maybe wanna run em.
Sign up here to apply for Event Mod

Now all we need is a server, lol has anyone even heard from Testtube (SSCC Admin) at all? I just hope he didn’t run off, I know recently hes been pissed of with the recent floodings. I really don’t wanna looking for another host, we all know the horror that is.

My Windows ME Review Runtime_ERROR | Monday, September 18, 2000

During the weekend I had the benefit of installing and updating my OS to Windows ME by Microsoft. I thought to myself when it was installing that this will be the great OS. Fast loading, better multi-tasking, and better resource usage, what else did I need?!

God was I wrong. I even recieved the Blue Screen of Death in the final process of the installation when it was detecting my plug-in-play devices (go figure). But for some unknown reason that didn't stop the setup, it kept going. Finally 45 minutes later it started to boot up. I must admit I was timing the boot up process to my previous OS (Windows 98). Windows ME took THE SAME TIME to boot up, where is this supposed faster boot time?!

So I was like ok, thats not really a big deal. I dialed up and started to play Subspace, everything was fine and good Until I decided to start a MP3. God was that a bad idea, the minute I started winamp and played a mp3 then returned to subspace, Subspace had become jerky and slow, like I was lagging real bad!

Well that was the final straw, I went into the Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs and un-installed that pitiful OS. If Microsoft did anything well it was the Uninstall feature, although it asked me 50 times wether or not if I wanted to uninstall it.

Runtime_ERROR's Final Verdict
Pros: Came with a lot of nice backgrounds and desktop wall papers for Windows. Better GUI Interface
Cons: Almost Everything. Didn't meet standards, slow, worse resource management.

In other words, think carefully before you decide to buy it! :)

Council Happenings CybeRise | Wednesday, September 13, 2000

There has been a lot of of talk amongst the Council these past few weeks about the possiblity of a new client, etc. Instead of summing it up to you myself, here is a rip of Harloch's post on sshq which explains it beautifully:

The Subspace Council is currently working up to a crescendo of activity lately with the announcement from programmer extraordinaire, PriitK (i'm the proud president of the PriitK fanclub), that there will be a ...

...wait for it...

...brand new Subspace client to be released shortly! The "client" of Subspace is the 6MB+ of information you currently have on your hard drive, thus for this new version you will be required to download some gear, all information about these downloads will of course be announced here at SubspaceHQ the moment it becomes available.

Here's a few answers to common questions that i've been able to piece together in the Council maillist:

Why? Client-side security is now unfortunately widely documented. Priit's new client, built ENTIRELY by himself, will patch previously known loopholes thus allowing greater in-game security. Paraphrasing JeffP, the original creator of Subspace, "Massively multiplayer games require the client to do most of the work". Thus, patching client loopholes will greatly reduce cheaters.

What will it be called...v1.36/1.37/2.1? No idea, don't ask stupid questions Sheepo.

Will i be forced to download this? Priit informs us that he wants this to be an "alternative client", meaning your current client and the new client will both be compatible. Eventually however, i'd imagine that the current version will be phased out by the new, and you'll be forced to download it.

What's new? Details haven't been released yet.

When will it be released? Soon. Testing phase has already begun, there's been some suggestions of having closed public testing sessions of each zone using the new client.

Is this legal? It's MORE legal than our current distribution of the game. We have verbal consent from the previous owners of the source code (VIE UK) as well as consent from JeffP, the aforementioned programmer who coded every line of the current version, to distribute the current version as we have been doing. I'm not sure if Brilliant Digital Entertainment (the current owners of the source code) have commented on our distribution yet, but up to this date i'm not aware of their disapproval of the way we've been handling it. This new version, completely coded by Priit himself, only constitutes one copyright infringement (the name) at least that's what i understand. Perhaps some of you legal eagles out there can help us out?

What can i do? Click on "SSHQ Main Board" and tell us what you want in the new client! What would you like to see changed about Subspace when you open it up? What do you want to see changed on the interior? Do you want to see the NightWasp fly again? Do you want to see an adjustable ALL-zones on-screen listing prioritised by the # of players instead of just a favourite's list? Do you want to see updated pics and specs, as well as updated links and if so, which ones? Post your thoughts on the SSHQ Main Board.

It's possible that i have some of the information above wrong, apologies to Priit if i have and i'll correct them as they come in.

Lastly, i'd like to welcome Runtime_ERROR and I88Gerbils (why do i always picture him as a Star Wars bountyhunter?) to the Subspace Council who will be representing T3 Gauntlet and A Small Warzone respectively, make them feel welcome!

Site Happenings hedcase1 | Monday, September 11, 2000

Ok dudes and dudettes I'm back with more site news...

As I mentioned late last week, SS.NET and SS.PCG.COM are merging. I would like to take a minute in clearing a few things up. This is a FULL Merger. Some people like *ahem* minefield *ahem* believe this is nothing new and basically a current site continuing and the other just going away. I would like to state that you will see changes in every aspect. Yes, the subspace.pcgaming.com address IS going away, but you will see a merger in CONTENT, STAFF, and DESIGN. This merger is exactly what it is. A merger. You will see a merger of how the site looks, externally and internally, with content being integrated and tons of new content being introduced and staff merging into 1 group. Also, I will still remain on board (I would NEVER leave SS.NET), but will work more in the background and coordinating.

With that being said, moving onto a few minor details. Because of this merger, it is requiring a move of servers, to something bigger, better and faster. This will occur in approximently 2-3 weeks. Due to this, the Hosting page has been updated and all requests will be placed on hold until after we move. I apologize for this inconvenience, but it is neccessary. Also updated is the Crew page.

And finally as CybeRise said, we have switched back to NewsPro for our primary way of posting news. I have emailed all ACTIVE news posters with their new accounts, if you didn't receive an email, contact me.
