October 2000

All I have to say is wow Rude Awakening | Tuesday, October 31, 2000
This years Dawn of the Dead had to be the best one ever. Although I didn't win I did manage to stay as a human for over half the event and no I didn't just run, I killed four or five zombies. Anyway I pretty much didn't do much with that event except advertise but I plan to help run the SNS2 event this Saturday. If you didn't make it to this event, you missed out on one heck of an event.

P.S. Just for the record I am not gay. Stfu Mackie :P
Problems? Not any more =) PLATINUM-HALO | Tuesday, October 31, 2000

MC vs PP result Crome | Tuesday, October 31, 2000

This game was the most intense match-up so far. It was dead heat for the first period. PP was a little more on the offensive side though, which gave them more chances to score. PP defence was incredible, but MC counterstriked with a offensive strategy which got the ball up the ice quicker every time. In the second period Power-Play's goalie "0void" lagged out, which gave MC the chance to score an open netter. BomberBoy saw this and created a cross with Dudenow to go past the defence and score an awesome goal. The third was as evenly matched as the first, but Valid somehow got another one past 0void.

Be sure to go to for more information on Subspace Hockey.

The 17th Parallel will soon have Squad Wars for you and all of your friends to create a squad and battle your way to the top. Every month, the squad that has won will have their squad name put on the map for that month. There are also two contests which include thinking of a new name for the zone, and redesigning the bases. For more information, check out the news for the 17th Parallel.

Star Warzone gets new map HeartBreakKid | Sunday, October 29, 2000

Tis HBK here. Seems that Star Warzone has gotten their new map everyone has been waiting for. I must say, the map looks great. So those that quit swz, or taking a break from it, all you guys come back and join the fun. Those that are wanting to try a different zone, I recommend SWZ to you. It has great flagging games. Bring your friends, bring your squaddies, even bring your enemies and join in on some fantastik flagging. On a side note, swz has also brought back private freqs. So bring out that old rusty Subspace CD, pop it in, install this old, but fun game, and join us in Star Warzone for some everlasting fun!
SSHZ Season Kickoff Yazour | Sunday, October 29, 2000

As Pikapoo mentioned below, the first game of the season takes place tonight @ 9pm est. The early cup favorites, SouthPark Cows (with an all-star lineup) take on the underdog Slashers led by Scuzzy Sureshot in what should be a great match-up.

If you'd like to witness this game and others, all league games are held in either SSCX Powerball/Hockey or SSCE Hockey Zone. You can find the full schedule at Center Ice.
Daylight Saving's Time Yazour | Sunday, October 29, 2000

Hey all, just a friendly reminder to set your clocks back an hour tonight (well, this morning) because it's Daylight Saving's Time. Sephiroso put it best when talking about this time of year... "it's havoc on leagues". Oh yeah. Good luck on the no-shows.
Space Duck Battle Rude Awakening | Friday, October 27, 2000

It seems that the popular zone Space Duck Battle that was removed from SSC zones is now on NGI. NGI is hosted by Snarklord, and it doesn't seem to be too laggy. It can get bad at times though. Go check it out.

Closed Beta Starts Runtime_ERROR | Thursday, October 26, 2000

Thats right! The new Subspace client being developed by Prittk and Mr Ekted has been reported that closed beta testing will begin next week!

The new client project called "Continuum" will be beta tested by SSC members. I'm not sure if all SSC will beta test but hopefully most of them will. If anyone from subspace.net is chosen as a beta test member we will bring you Screenshots and reviews on it as soon as possible, with the permission from the SCC.

I will report more as it develops.

Also, I was looking over at the Powerball site and yoinked this:

The next event of PBCup 2000 will be starting soon. The playing fields are already set up in ?go pbcup arenas. The settings are based on those found in ?go traospb, and the map is smallpb14. The map is well-suited because it can be played with as little as 4 players per team and as many as 8 players per team.
There will be 16 randomized teams for PBCup 2000, with 15 to 16 players per team. The event will last only two weeks, with 3 rounds of season play to determine seeding for a single elimination tournament playoff. If a team shows with less than 3 players, games will be held in smallpb3 arenas.

You can still sign up for PBCup 2000 (anyone who signed up for the first event has automatically been entered in Event 2). Team rosters and schedule will be coming soon. Links to PBCup website are on the right.

Also, 20 Questions should be up and going again in after I get done my mid-terms at school.

17th Parallel down? Questioning Silence | Wednesday, October 25, 2000

I have been notified that yesterday, the 17th Parallel was down due to high latency and everyone being kicked into spectator mode. I am not sure about this, but until I get SubSpace working on Windows 2000, I can't be too sure on these type of topics. I will keep the posts on the 17th Parallel up to date as much as possible.
Laughs to brighten your day HeartBreakKid | Wednesday, October 25, 2000

Hey guys. I was recently checking the DSB site and ran across a site that Loops, sysop of DSB, mentioned on this popular zone website. This is rather funny. I tried it out myself. If you have any websites you have in mind, or even like to see this site here kinda translated in a different, yet wackier way, goto the following link below and just follow the steps to get a laff.

WLI on SSnet! Rude Awakening | Wednesday, October 25, 2000

*Gasp*I couldn't believe it myself when it happened but *Cough*WLI Superzone is on SSnet. For those of you who don't *Choke* know, the sysops of WLI have been long enemies of Gemini Dream. *Sputter* Gemini Dream is the sysop of the SSnet server, which any case the SSnet zones servers have nothing to do with SS.NET. Gemini Dream and the WLI sysops began arguing and fighting over a period of time which got really ugly. Well I the zone under SSnet servers and I about flipped. I headed over to the SSHQ message boards to confirm what I heard and sure enough, GD and XO finally made some peace.
subspace.net-games.com Rude Awakening | Wednesday, October 25, 2000

Yes, I am getting rid of that domain I am here at SS.NET now. But let me set a few things straight from the post over at SSHQ. I am not Black_Cobra anymore! I stopped being Black_Cobra a long time ago. Stop calling me that. :P As for the "owning for the domain" Dark Hour never owned it, we had a partnership thing. Since I was the only one that ever did anything with the website and he decided not to be a part of it anymore I took his ftp away. Then when I came back here, out of the goodness of my heart I gave the domain name to him and NR's Subspace5. I hope they bring new life into that domain as it just fell flat on it's face before.
Star Warzone League HeartBreakKid | Tuesday, October 24, 2000

Tis HBK! I'm back, thanks to hedcase.

Star Warzone League is going to start soon. Captain Harloch and myself are working on the new rules. Once they are finalized, we will be accepting squad applications. The rules should be done by next week if Harloch stays off the liquor :)

In other news, I am working on a project I tried started working on weeks ago before this merger but never got around to do it. The project should be done sometime this week. The project that I am working on is The Vault. The Vault will include many things. Things that will be included will be desktop backgrounds, icq skins, winamp skins, screensavers, banners and many other things. If you have any of these things that you'd like to include with The Vault, email me and lemme know what you have you'd like to include.
Computer Hacking!? Questioning Silence | Tuesday, October 24, 2000

There has been talk about people and their computers being hacked, causing hardship and chaos for those people. I have heard that people's hard disks have been remotely formatted. A site has been suggested that will test your internet security. To access this site, click here. After entering this site, scroll down and click on the Shields Up! banner and it will tell you your internet security.
Site News hedcase1 | Monday, October 23, 2000

Well, we are finally returning to normal around here. I have just finished getting the hosted sites FTP accounts back online. They should all be back online at this point and functioning 100%.

Also, I have setup the subdomains again, they should become active tomorrow night (that's Tuesday night...).

Email accounts have been restored as I mentioned in my earlier post today and you can access that information by going to the Submail page.

Finally, I am trying to get the forums back online permanently in the next few days. But for now you can click here to visit them.

If you find any errors, bugs or problems, please email us.
Change That Damn Music! Runtime_ERROR | Monday, October 23, 2000

This has been a topic of some discussion lately and a lot of people have been wondering, how do I change the background victory music?! After you see how simple it is you will kick yourself.

Explanation of Files:
victoryl.wa2 - The Background .wav music
victory.wa2 - This will be played when the victory is declared and final (end of Background music)

1. Find a wav sound you would like as the background music. Becareful selecting one, if you decompile a MP3 into a .wav file to play it will create some horrible lag and screw you all up. What works for me is a .WAV file with 176KBps/22Khz. You can find out this information in winamp or almost any .WAV file player. Usually anything higher will cause lag.

2. Put the file in your subspace directory and rename it to victoryl.wa2 A common error: do not rename it in windows using the F2 key and typing in the name, because most of the time Windows will make it comes out to be victoryl.wa2.wav (In my opinion, the best place to rename it is in DOS/DOS Prompt) Just double check before entering Subspace with it. You can do this by Right Clicking the file and selecting properties. If you did it right it should read victoryl.wa2 under MS-DOS Name.

3. And have fun with your new music, if you ever want to restore your old victory/bg music just delete or move the files out of the subspace directory and thats it.

Side Note (thanks to divine): Do not make either .wa2 file large, subspace will croak on it when it loads everything at the beginning.
Hi Hi Hi There! Sage | Monday, October 23, 2000

Hey everyone, yet anotehr person on the SSNET staff now, i'm Sage, or Sage886 as you will see me in subspace. Pretty much I will be focusing my news posting on the zone Witch Doom, and anything else I have to share with the rest of the Subspace community, and I will be doing editorials, which you will find here. So hopefully I will progress to different jobs while i'm part of SSnet, but this is what i'll be doing for now :) .. Bye Bye
Email Accounts hedcase1 | Monday, October 23, 2000

Ok guys and gals, we have finally gotten Submail working again. If you had sent us your account information prior to the server move, then it is already in the database and working. Please visit the Submail page for instructions on how to access it.

If you had an account prior to the server move and it does not work, email us with your username and a password to have it restored.

And finally, if you want to signup for an account, again head on over to the Submail page and signup :)

Special thanks goes to the guys at Cubed Interactive and to KEMIST for allowing us to use this great webmail program!
Extreme Games League PLATINUM-HALO | Monday, October 23, 2000

Discoveries Rude Awakening | Monday, October 23, 2000

One day I was fooling around and I typed in www.subspace.com, well it came up with the screen that the website is not yet up and it is not for the game Subspace. Well I kept visiting it every often and still nothing has changed. It is still the same page as it was almost a year ago. What could this website be? Is there ever going to be anything there? And if not will the domain ever be free to be bought again?
Also in an earlier news post, I mentioned about the new Ds98 Network website design. Well in the network links there is the link for SSZONE.COM. When trying to access the site it says server not found. Could this mean a birth of a new SSZONE.COM?
Last but not least I have found a site that claims to give free domain names. The domain name is yours and you control it. Is this really to good to be true? I haven't tried the sign up process so go here to try it out.
Gladiator? Rude Awakening | Monday, October 23, 2000

Yes many people have wondered what is SSCU Gladiator, and why is there never any people in the zone? Well, SSCU Gladiator is going to be a League that has pro settings and a small map set to resemble a arena from the Rome days where the Gladiators would fight. This league is set to kick off within a month or so. So be on the lookout for that.
DS98 facelift Rude Awakening | Monday, October 23, 2000

Another design as been added to DS98 Network Website. This in my opinion isn't as good as the old design but it still looks good. It has updated info on the network and new contact info. Go check it out!
Its Over Runtime_ERROR | Sunday, October 22, 2000

Yes, in my opinion the conversion is FINALLY FINISHED! I have already started recieving new account requests, i'm going to talk with the rest administration on when I should start making the accounts or who is going to do it period.

I have recieved some e-mails asking what is a .plan and a finger on the right menu. These are for the administration to keep you updated on what they are currently working on and estimated time to finish it. Reason we did this was to keep the community informed of behind the scenes action without cluttering up the main news board.

Like I said before if you see any problems to make sure to let us know. Current problems we know about is the Link Database. Thats because we haven't gotten our SQL server up and running yet.

Rude Awakening made a good point to me that I should express out, If you are in love with a certain zone you have been there a while and know whats going on and we dont have a reporter from that zone, LET US KNOW! Who knows you may be SS.net offical reporter for that zone.

With all that said, I hope you enjoy Subspace.Net version 3.0
New Client Happenings CybeRise | Saturday, October 21, 2000

Thought I would take a moment to clear up a few things. Now I'm sure many of you have already seen the front end screenshots for the upcoming new client that is being worked on. This has stired up a lot of excitement and a lot of confusion. The engine's name may be called Continum but that does not mean that Subspace is going to be renamed to Continum. Rest assure that the name of the game we all love is going to stay more than likely similiar.

In other news, you may have noticed that we are finally coming alive here at Ssnet. I've had to crack the whip a few times to get some of the staff moving but over all we are doing very good and moving quite fast. Forums are being worked on, we are trying our best to transfer over the database but are having problems. Best situation would be for the forums to continue working and keep all the registered users in the database, worst would be to do a fresh install. As for hosted sites check out my lastest .plan.
All CGI is up and running Runtime_ERROR | Saturday, October 21, 2000

Ahh it is so nice to be back in NewsPro *drool*, its pain updating HTML everytime you have a news item.

Anyways everything is online and working finally! If you have any problems with the CGI e-mail me!

Enjoy!
And it begins... CybeRise | Wednesday, October 11, 2000

Yes, I must say I do have catchy titles :) Anyway, as hed has been announcing we are moving the server very shortly and damn am I looking forward to the amount of work with adding all those accounts again ;p You may have noticed (as mackie was kind enough to point out) we already have www.sscouncil.net on the new server as well as a new other domains which will be announced later.

And have you signed up for the Warzone Leagues yet?
Yes, we do care :p CybeRise | Wednesday, October 11, 2000

Here's some stuff from Zeus:
Extreme Games League will be starting the 18th of November. The cut-off deadline for signups will be the 1st of November. We realize this is reasonably short notice but most squads have been waiting in anticipation for this for quite some time. We welcome squads of course from all zones and would love to have them. Please see www.subspace.net/eg/ for further information to sign up. There will also be some prizes offered to the winning squad, web hosting at subspace.net and some custom designed ss hats thanks to the donation of Subspace.net.
SSCouncil.Net hedcase1 | Wednesday, October 11, 2000

I took this from SSHQ as well Mackie and I made this news :P

Many of you have expressed an intrest in having a SubSpace Council website, with an up to date list of members and their contact info, news, links, ect. Well....your wish has been granted. Hedcase1 of SS.Net and myself are devloping http://www.sscouncil.net. A temporary page has been placed up, and the design, by pet virus of SpecFreq.Com fame, is under devlopment. More news as WE make it. :)

Final Preparations hedcase1 | Tuesday, October 10, 2000

I have just emailed every Email account and every email redirect that has an account with us here on Subspace.Net. This was the final notice to everyone who has an account with us and the last warning before we switch servers beginning tomorrow afternoon.

Subspace.Net will be down for approximently 24 hours starting tomorrow afternoon. You will not be able to access the domain.

Also, when the domain comes back and you do not have access to your account for whatever reason, email me at: jcarlson@pcgaming.com to let me know. I am almost positive I cannot recreate the several hundred accounts we have in the database within a day, so just shoot me an email and I'll get to it ASAP.

Thank you for your patience during this process, it certainly will be hectic for the next few days, but this will definitely be worth it in the long run!

Site Move This Week! hedcase1 | Tuesday, October 10, 2000

Ok this is the week. Tomorrow is when the beginning of the switch over to the new server will take place. This is when the DNS will be updated and you will not be able to access this site. Continuum Defender | Tuesday, October 10, 2000

Here is what is posted on sshq:
Mr Ekted has posted new screenshots of the upcoming client. To fill in those who are unfamiliar with this project, PriitK and Mr Ekted are rebuilding the Subspace engine from the ground up. They're calling their engine "Continuum". The screenshots were posted on our SS Development Forum.....

Wow, I'm still blown away by this new client. Check out the screenshot. Click on the picture for larger image.

Subspace 0wnz j00 CybeRise | Monday, October 9, 2000

There has been a lot of talk now over this whole Sony buying Infantry situation. And this seems to be the smart way to go with the game. But we must still remember how much Subspace 0wnz. Here's a lil snip from EvilAvatar (this dude obviously knows his games :)

Personally, I hated Infantry. I believe it is based on the Subspace game engine and your player seemed to "float" around the map much the same way that the ships did in Subspace. It seemed like they never adjusted the game physics to take into account it was people instead of space ships. Subspace is a far superior game, IMHO.

Wall passing is heated topic in powerball and have been recently discused for change. Here is what ZippyDan has to say:

Anything 981655 does shall constitute a Red Card violation. Furthermore, the penalties dictated by a Red Card shall never be defined and will be left to the imagination of the new PB Sysops: Nimbus and Spitfire.

?help Crome | Friday, October 6, 2000

10/04/00 Just writing to announce a new feature. If you need help with
Trench Wars (newbie questions, etc.) you can type ?help (question). A staff
member will get back to you as soon as one is available. We will make an
effort to answer the questions you may have. Keep in mind if we catch you
veterans (or anyone else) being irresponsible and asking dumb questions just
to piss us off we will do something about it, and quickly.

Genuine questions will be answered as fast as we are able. Please remember
that staff members are all volunteers and are not "customer support
representatives," and we are providing this service at no cost to you in an
attempt to help you, the players. There are times in which staff members are
too preoccupied to respond. Therefore, you will occasionally not receive a
response from us. If this is the case, wait an hour or two later to ask
your question. -DoCk>
KJW for TW Smod Crome | Friday, October 6, 2000

10/06/00 This latest news update is to adjust the staff list. KJW has been
promoted to Super Moderator, and will aid YoMama!! in searching for good
staff members. KJW is a respected moderator and player and has been with us
for longer than I can remember. *DO NOT* bother us requesting a position
on staff! ZH applications are no longer being accepted for the time being,
and asking more than once will lower your chances of being accepted. -DoCk>

Last Call hedcase1 | Wednesday, October 4, 2000

OK, as long as everything goes to plan, this site and ALL its contents (minus the domains I host) will be moving NEXT WEEK. I now have the privilage of moving at my leisure and once we finish a few projects and finish my account list, we will be moving. This is the LAST CALL for anyone who has an email account, email redirect, or ftp account (aka HOSTING ACCOUNT) to email ME ASAP.

If you have already done this, don't worry I have yours in my new database I have made to keep track of all these. If you do not submit this information to me, you will not have your account next week. This also means you cannot bitch at me for losing it. If this happens, just ask nicely and I'll set it right back up. I cannot find any other easier way to inform this to everyone I host as my control program does not have a way to email all 600+ accounts and I am not about to sit here and type out every single email address :P

So, again, this is the LAST CALL and your last warning. SEND IT TO ME! If you don't you won't have your account next week.

The downtime for the site will be absolutely minimal. It should only last ONE DAY for the DNS to be updated with the new location. I again apologize for this, but if this wasn't worth it (which it is) I wouldn't be doing all this work.

And yes if you are wondering, this is when you will see the merger of Subspace.Net and Subspace.PCGaming.Com, it will be well worth the wait I hope ;)

UPDATE:The domains I host will be moved to a second server(also new) as well next week.
Pro League Website hedcase1 | Tuesday, October 3, 2000

Well after a few days downtime, the Pro League Website has been restored at Warzone.com. All plans disrupted due to the unexpected downtime have been restarted and everything should be be back to normal.

NOTE: subspace.net/pro will also redirect you there for all you lazy people :P

Turf Arizona Yazour | Sunday, October 1, 2000

It seems Era and 1stStrike will be running the new Turf Arizone! Here's the announcement at OGaming:

"Hey folks I found a great person out there named Era who will most likely be hosting Turf Arizona off his OC-3. I am going to be sysop along with Era in the zone. I really don't have any smods or mods yet...so obviously there is positions available. So..you know my icq number :) 49582994

I hope that lots of veterens to the zone will come back because they are the ones that can help me make the zone shine in it's former glory the most. But don't get me wrong..all are welcome. So, when Turf Arizona goes back up look on your servers for it because a tiny piece of subspace's past is coming back to life!"
